A New Mala Ceremony Kirtan

Chanting (Kirtan) is a part of the path of Devotional Yoga. When we see the beauty of our own being we are seeing the beauty of the Being that is the One of which we are all a part. And when we turn towards that One, love is the natural reaction of the heart.

“The words of these chants are called the divine names and they come from a place that’s deeper than our hearts and our thoughts, deeper than the mind. And so as we sing them they turn us towards ourselves, into ourselves. They bring us in, and as we offer ourselves into the experience, the experience changes us. These chants have no meaning other than the experience that we have by doing them. They come from the Hindu tradition, but it’s not about being a Hindu, or believing anything in advance. It’s just about doing it, and experiencing. Nothing to join, you just sit down and sing.”

– Krishna Das

As we head to the 9th annual Open Your Heart in Paradise Retreat in Maui, Hawaii, we are happy to offer you Sri Ram Kirtan Sadhana that captures one of our favorite parts of the 5-day retreat.

We made this professional audio track live during the Ram Dass mala ceremony at last year’s gathering in December 2015. During this session, each retreatant greets Ram Dass personally and receives a mala with a thread from Maharaj-ji Neem Karoli Baba’s blanket, at the altar that graces the retreat.

The chanting holds this sacred space for all and seals the teachings received during the retreat into everyones wide open hearts.

Mala Ceremony

During this session and while the greeting is happening, Krishna Das and Nina Rao lead the group in chanting the mantra ‘Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram’ accompanied musically by the band. At the end arti (waving sacred lamp lights) is offered to the images of all the saints and deities presiding over the retreat. It starts with Krishna Das singing Hanuman Stawan and if you listen carefully you will hear the arti bell!

The cost is $4 for this 1 hour 38 minute track.

We hope that this continuous chanting of the sacred mantra will help you to deepen your own chanting practice at home; your car; wherever; or be the sound track for your asana practice.
